BNT BAK SOR NEE MINZ

(Bent Back Sore Knee Mine)

A separate attraction at the Coal Miners' Memorial is a simulated mine. It gives visitors a first-hand look and feel for what it is like to work in an underground coal mine.

The mine is called the "BNT BAK SOR NEE MINZ". It received its name to bring attention to the fact that miners often endured back and knee injuries while digging for black gold. The unusual spelling of the mine's name is a light-hearted way of recognizing that some coal miners in the early day had to sacrifice educational opportunities to make a living and support their families.

The simulated mine is located underneath a stage where the Coal Miners' Organization often holds entertainment, concerts and other events.
