Letcher County Coal Miners' Memorial

In Honor of Fallen Heroes

FATALITY MEMORIAL

"A Tribute To Miners Who Gave All"

The fatality memorial rocks stands as a lasting tribute to each miner who made the ultimate sacrifice while mining coal. Mining coal is the only way of life for many Letcher Countians. A retired miner once said, "It gets in your blood." Miners not only earned a wage to support their families, but extended their families to include fellow workers as brothers. Not only did miners work together but many of them enjoyed the mountains together. It is nearly impossible to find a family in east Kentucky that hasn't been touched in some way by loosing a loved one in the mine.

The rocks are also a tribute to each of the families who were left to continue life. Many wives were left without husbands. Many children were left without fathers. Many parents were left without a son. These memorial rocks stands in tribute to all of these. Hopefully the pain of loosing a loved one will be lessened and healing encouraged by viewing each name on these memorials.
